Epidote | Stone Information, Healing Properties, Uses

Epidote is the most common mineral of the Epidote group, a group of silicate minerals with similar structural and compositional properties. Epidote forms as a secondary mineral within low-medium grade regionally metamorphosed rocks. It is a metamorphic mineral that generally forms with small amounts of Quartz. As a secondary mineral, Epidote is found abundantly in other minerals, such as Unakite, Garnets, as well as Prehnite!

This deep green stone is found all around the world, but the highest quality Epidote specimens come from mines in France, Norway, Austria, Russia, and Namibia. Its name is derived from the Greek words epiprosthetos, meaning “additionally”, and dido, meaning “to give”. Epidote generally forms in a deep olive green color but it can also form in yellow, brown and black hues as well. It is of medium hardness, being a 6-7 on the Mohs scale.

This silicate mineral forms in a monoclinic crystal structure, creating long slender prismatic crystals. The crystals can also form in fan-like crystal structures. This stone displays an extremely lustrous exterior and has been admired for ages. It was first identified as its own mineral by a French crystallographer in 1801, before being considered to be the same mineral as Actinolite.

Energetically, Epidote is a strong stone of amplification. It is said to enhance every energy that it is surrounded by. If you have positive energy, it will enhance it, if you have negative energy, it will enhance it. Depending on your energy, this stone can be a double edged sword. Be sure to only carry Epidote when you’re having a good day with balanced, positive energy so the stone can enhance that energy and make it even better. It is known as a karma-based stone that will attract what energy you give.

The zodiac signs that this stone is associated with are Gemini, Virgo and Libra. It is also energetically aligned with the elements of water and earth. As a stone of expansion and attraction, it holds a strong karmic energy and is associated with all 7 chakras. It is said to balance and remove energy blockages from the 7 chakras, targeting the specific areas that are holding the strongest vibrational interferences.
